How to Find Student Accommodation in Canada

Student Accommodation in Canada

Canada is one of the most popular destinations for international students. Every year, hundreds of students move to Canada to pursue their preferred courses or programs from Canadian universities or institutions. However, being a student, the most daunting task is to find a place to stay in. But fret not, Canada has many options available for the students to provide them the accommodation. These options range from on-campus accommodations to off-campus renting ones, from subletting to home stays. Let’s talk about all these alternatives in detail:

On-campus accommodations:
Mostly, the Canadian Institutes and universities provide residence to their students, especially to students in their first year. These accommodations are generally cozy and well furnished. The rent is mostly lesser as compared to the other options. The cost of on-campus accommodations might range from $600 CAD to $1600 CAD per annum, and it varies according to the institute or university as well as the province/territory you’re staying in. Also, the accommodations are generally in the vicinity of the institute or university you’re studying in. Therefore, for international students, on-campus accommodation can be a good choice.

Renting Off-Campus accommodations:

After completing their first year, most of the students choose to (or asked to) look for an off-campus accommodation near their institute or university. Although getting off-campus accommodation might be a little complicated, but once you find it, you’re less likely to regret it. The cost of off-campus accommodations ranges from $700 CAD to $1500 CAD per month, and it also depends upon the type of accommodation and the province or territory in which you choose to study.

Home stay:

Under this type of accommodation, the residents of the particular province or territory you’re studying offer the home stay facility to the international students. These arrangements are generally made by certain associations, e.g., Canada Home stay Network.

Due to the Covid 19, finding accommodation has become quite challenging for international students. However, with proper research about the costs and availability of the accommodations according to your budget and planning, one can get a suitable place to stay.

All You Need To Know About Canada Study Permit

As the new academic year is approaching, many students plan to move to Canada for further studies. However, there are a few things to keep in mind before beginning the process to make you feel more at ease about the path ahead of you. Also, people have a lot of questions in mind about how much does it cost? Will you be allowed to work to help defray your expenses? What is it like to be a student in Canada? And, most importantly, what options do you have? In this article, you will find the answers to all these questions.

What is Canada Study Permit?

The Canada Study permit is a document that the IRCC issues to the candidates willing to move to Canada for their further studies.

For which courses do I need a study permit?

A candidate requires a study permit if they choose to pursue a course or program with 6 months or longer duration. However, in a program that lasts for less than 6 months, you can follow it on a regular tourist Visa.

What are the eligibility criteria for the Canada Study Permit?

To be eligible for the Canada study Permit, the candidate must apply to any of Canada’s Designated Learning Institutes (DLIs). The DLI’s are the institutes and Universities granted permission from the Govt. of Canada to accept the admissions of international students.

What are the requirements for the Canada study permit?

One of the primary documents you need to present is a letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institute (DLI) and proof of minimum funds. The other required documents will vary according to your circumstances.

Can I work in Canada on a Study Permit?

The Canada Study permit allows you to work in Canada for part-time jobs, wherein a part-time job should be a maximum of 30 hours per week. Though the cost of living is not so high in Canada, the extra earnings could still help the students. Moreover, if you have your spouse or a partner who has accompanied you for your study duration, s/he is also eligible to apply for a job in Canada.

How much does It cost to study in Canada?

The tuition fee for international students in Canada is a bit higher than the citizens of Canada. However, it is manageable. The average tuition costs range from $29,000 per annum, but this for the costly program’s engineering and dentistry at highly rated universities. The prices of the humanities courses are generally lower.

New Canadian Public Immigration Policy for International Students

Along with the various changes in the Immigration policies, the Federal Govt. of Canada has modified the Canadian Immigration policy for International Students. In Jaunary’2021, the Canadian Minister of Immigration, Marco Mendicino, finally disclosed the new policy for the international students who are willing to move to Canada for study.

According to the new policy, the former students who hold a PGWP, i.e., Post Graduate Work Permit, can apply for an open work permit. Moreover, the new policy also states that the international students studying in Canadian Institutes or Universities whose PGWP has expired or will expire soon will be able to apply for a new open work permit, which will be valid for 18 months. This will eventually enable those students to stay in Canada, get employment, and the work experience required to become a permanent resident of Canada.

Canadian Government is putting notable efforts to motivate International students to become permanent residents of Canada. It will help the Canadian economy grow and flourish with the increasing substantial workforce.

The govt. also stated that the applications for open work permits would be available until 27 July 2021 to foreign graduates. To be eligible for the same, one should accept a Designated Learning Institute (DLI) in Canada, which are supposed to be the colleges or universities authorized by the Canadian Govt. that accept International students. However, if you are not eligible for the PGWP, you don’t need to worry because there are so many colleges in Canada that are not part of the PGWP program, e.g., Evergreen College. No college or University in Canada provides you with a work permit after graduation; it is totally up to you to acquire one before you start working. Therefore, there is no concrete reason not to take admission to these institutions. An open work permit is much like a PGWP only in which you can change your job as long as you’re in your profession’s same domain.

Steps to be taken while starting with the process

The first thing to do is to make sure that you’re eligible for studying in Canada, as well as that you’re suitable for the course you want to pursue from your desired university or institute. Once you get your letter of acceptance, the next most important things to have are a valid passport and proof that you’ll be able to pay for your education. If you’re you’re able to make it through and graduate in your preferred course or domain, you can remain in Canada for work there and get settled.

Top Reasons You Could Be Inadmissible to Canada in 2021

Nobody wants to be denied entry to a country they have traveled to after going through a daunting application process and spending a hefty amount of money. However, there are specific parameters based on which the immigrants might be inadmissible to Canada. Here, in this article, we’ve enlisted those reasons so that you can plan your application accordingly.

  1. Past Criminal Conviction: If you’ve ever been convicted of a crime in your lifetime, then you definitely might be denied entry to the Canadian borders as Canada strictly condemns and states it illegal to grant entry to an individual who has committed any crime in any country.

  2. Violation of Human or International Rights: This includes war crimes, crimes against humanity, or being in a senior position in a government that has been internationally sanctioned or is responsible for gross human rights violations.

  3. Involved in an Organized Crime: This means that if you’re a part of some criminal organization, or have any association with a group of members who are involved in any illegal activities, then you are not at all welcomed to Canada.

  4. Medical Reasons: If you are suffering from any chronic or fatal disease, or any such disorder that might be a threat to public health and safety, then it might be difficult for you to get entry into the country.

  5. Financial Reasons: In case the officials at the borders do not find you capable of bearing your expenses in Canada, or you’re unable to showcase any proof for the same, then you’ll be immediately sent back to your native country.

  6. Misinterpretation: If you are caught presenting any false information specifically relevant to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) decisions taken by immigration officers, or if you are found to be hiding information, you will be denied entry. This entails failing to comply with the IRPA requirements or bringing an inadmissible member of the family with you on arrival.

What to do in case you’re denied entry to Canada?

If you’re denied entry to Canada or exceeded your permit, you can apply for Authorization to Return to Canada, i.e. (ARC). However, before applying for ARC, it is necessary to know why the denied entry or inadmissibility so that you can prove that you’re in a position to be allowed access to Canada again. It is also essential for you to apply for the ARC before you apply for the Visa. For that matter, it will be suitable and helpful for you to hire an RCIC, because your RCIC will take care of your entire process. You will also not have to worry about anything as your application will be in the right hands.

Canada among top ‘safe and stable’ countries for international students

Due to its impeccable measures and guidelines in the view of Covid-19, Canada becomes one of the top countries that are said to be ‘safe and stable’ for international students. By doing so, Canada has retained its position of being the “go-to” study destination for students from across the globe.

According to a survey, Canada is considered to be the country, that is both safe and welcoming to the new immigrants, unlike many other countries. Moreover, Canada has proposed certain guidelines in order to  enable the international students to immigrate to their preferred country for studies. However, the students, who are willing to move to Canada are only allowed to attend the institute or university which has got the approval, based on its COVID-19 readiness plan from the concerned provincial government, irrespective of the country that student is travelling from. There is no doubt about the fact that international students choose Canada over other countries when it comes to studies and a bright career.

Needless to say, Canada is very popular for its lenient immigration policies. Even a global pandemic could not stop it from carrying forward its efforts and measures in this particular field. Initially, Canada made an announcement which stated that the country would be inviting  1.2 million permanent residents in the next couple of years, and in order to achieve this target, the international students will hold the greatest significance. It seems that the government has been successful in implementing the statement. When the Canada citizenship test resumed online, it prioritized foreign graduates on the waitlist. On top of that, Canada will also be launching two new Canada immigration pathways for Hong Kong residents in 2021, fastening its position as a refuge for those persecuted in their homeland.

Canada approves coronavirus vaccine as it increases immigration levels

Canada gives the nod to the Covid 19 vaccine. By doing so, Canada becomes the third country to approve the new Pfizer BioNtech vaccine. According to Health Canada dept., the detailed information, including scientific summaries and complete clinical trial data, will be made available in the next few weeks. Health Canada has also put down specific terms and conditions regarding the vaccine, which are as follows:

  1. Monthly safety monitoring reports including information about side effects.
  2. Additional data on the safety and efficacy of the drug including final data from existing and proceeding clinical trials.
  3. Further quality data validating there are methods and controls to ensure vaccines of suitable quality are being produced.

Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, also mentioned in one of his tweets that about 2,49,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine would arrive in the country by the end of 2020. He also stated that there would be enough quantity of vaccine available in the country in early 2021.

Canada has become a world leader in terms of the number of COVID-19 vaccines it has acquired based on a per capita basis. Moreover, Canada has signed contracts with seven companies and has secured 414 million doses of vaccines.

The approved vaccines are set to be completely free for Canada’s citizens, which are primarily available for the priority population, that includes,

  • Residents and faculty of shared living settings who take care of the seniors
  • People 70 years of age and older, with the order of priority:
    • starting with adults 80 years of age and older
    • decreasing the age limit by 5-year increments to age 70 years as supply becomes available
  • Health-care workers who have direct contact with patients, including:
    • People who work in health care settings
    • personal support workers

Afterwards, it will be available to every other citizen in the country, who are recommended to get vaccinated by the federal, provincial or the territorial public health authorities.

With this huge vaccination campaign in its history, Canada can now expect many potential immigrants this year. Hopefully, the approval and proper utilization of the vaccine will lead to the increasing number of immigrants to Canada in near future. Availing vaccines to the residents of Canada will definitely be a catalyst for bringing back the country and its immigration system to normal.
