What is a Labour Market Impact Assessment?

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer may be required to obtain prior to the hiring of a foreign employee or worker.

A positive LMIA (also known as a confirmation letter) would demonstrate that there is a need or requirement for a foreign employee or worker that fits the job requirements.  In addition, it would show that there are no Canadian workers or permanent residents available to fill the job opening.

Once an employer has secured a confirmation letter, the employee or worker is then able to apply for a work permit.
